Review: YSL All Hours Luminous Matte Foundation

Review: YSL All Hours Luminous Matte Foundation

Luminous and matte - not two words that you often see together when describing a foundation. Normally, it's one or the other, or perhaps dewy or satin, so I was instantly intrigued when I received this foundation in the post. I reviewed the original All Hours foundation here, which really took me by surprise as full coverage foundations are not usually my type of base, but I loved how smooth it made my skin look. So how does the Luminous Matte version fare?

There are 40 shades of this foundation available in a variety of tones (light, medium, deep) and undertones (cool, warm, neutral), so there should be a shade for everyone. This foundation is similar to the original in terms of how lightweight it is, also in terms of staying power - it doesn't transfer on to my mask, and we've had some pretty warm/unseasonably mild days recently (17 degrees in November in Ireland? Who'd have thought?!), and it has stayed put. Also, a little goes a long way, which I love as I don't like the feeling of a lot of product on my face (even if I am wearing a lot of products!). What makes it different from the original version is that it contains hyaluronic acid, which is perfect for those of us with dry skin, who want some more coverage in winter, but not a full on matte base. I do tend to go for more coverage in the colder months as it suits the stronger lip colour I might wear and usually warmer eye looks too.

What I love about this foundation is that when I apply it, it will even out my skin tone, it doesn't look or feel heavy, but it covers areas of redness without looking cakey. It also doesn't settle into fine lines, probably due to the hyaluronic acid, but it also is so lightweight that it feels like I'm not wearing a base, and also manages to look skin-like, despite the coverage.

Like I said, it doesn't transfer to my mask, so this is the ideal foundation to wear with scarves and high collar coats (I hate when foundation gets on to my scarf!), also for party season, as it's so long-lasting on the skin - I never wear my base for 24 hours, but I've worn it for a good 10 hours and it has looked the same as when applied.

Now for the luminous matte claim. I have to say that it does add some luminosity, probably due to the fact that it is comprised of 77% skincare ingredients, however it doesn't look dewy. It basically just gives the look of healthy skin. It's definitely matte, however not at all flat and because it looks so natural on the skin (despite being matte), and because of the ingredients being so high in skincare, it doesn't look like a regular matte foundation. As someone with very dry skin, I don't usually like full coverage foundations because of how heavy they feel and they can look ageing on my skin, however this one doesn't. If you have oily skin, don't worry - your skin won't look greasy or dewy, it just gives the look of a healthy radiance.

I can see myself wearing this over the Christmas period as we have my husband's family visiting and I know that there will be some long days and I'll want a foundation I can be sure will last without touch ups, as I only like to wear small bags, which don't have much room for makeup!

Are you intrigued by this luminous matte foundation? I'd love to hear your thoughts!
