Since losing so much of my hair last year post-Covid, I've been on a mission to get my hair into good condition and keep it that way, and I'm happy to say that I've achieved that - I was really worried when I got infected again in August, but this time around, I didn't lose any hair. My hair has grown so much (I can see regrowth around my hairline) and I basically just need a trim when I am due a haircut, because my split ends are at a minimum. It's years since I've been so happy with my hair, and since it has been in such good condition, so I thought that I would share the products that I am using regularly with you today in case your hair is brittle, falling out or just generally in bad condition. It might look like this post is sponsored by Kérastase but it isn't (I wish!) - it's just a brand that I love and have used for over 20 years.
Pre shampoo treatment: Olaplex No 3. (Save 20% by using the code LYMIN at the checkout on Look Fantastic). This will come as no surprise to regular readers because I've been raving about it since I first used it a few years ago. This has probably made the biggest difference to my hair, in terms of strength, repair and elasticity. I leave it in my hair for as long as possible, but a minimum of 15 minutes if I'm in a hurry. I love the whole range - see Brand Focus post here, however if I had to choose just one product from the brand, it would be No 3.
Shampoos: I have a number of shampoos, but my favourites are Living Proof Perfect Hair Day Triple Detox Shampoo, (Save 20% by using the code LYMIN at the checkout on Look Fantastic)which I use to get rid of build up of product - dry shampoo being the main one! What I love about this shampoo is that it doesn't strip my hair colour at all - in fact, it brightens the blend of the balayage I currently have. It doesn't leave my hair feeling overly dry or brittle either. The second shampoo that I love is Kérastase Blond Absolu Le Bain Cica Extreme (I love the Blond Absolu range, in general). This shampoo is rich in texture and is very moisturising, due to the fact that it contains Hyaluronic Acid, at two molecular levels, Edelweiss Oil and 40 times more lipids than regular shampoos, leaving hair elasticized, strong, nourished and soft. A little goes a long way with this, so whilst it's pricier than some shampoos, it will last a long time.
Conditioners: I have two favourites: Kiehl's Amino Acid Conditioner*, which strengthens hair bonds, and also leaves hair feeling silky soft. My second one is one I have used on and off for around 20 years: Kérastase Resistance Ciment Anti-Usure, which repairs damaged hair, leaving it stronger, more elasticized and smooth. Both of these are brilliant to use if you don't have the time to use a hair mask, as they really are effective.
Mask: I love a good hair mask and I tend to leave them in for as long as possible, but if I don't have time, I apply it, clip my hair up and then wash, exfoliate, shave my legs, and this takes 5-10 minutes and then I'll rinse it out, so don't be put off by hair masks if you think they only work if you leave them in for hours! The one I am using most at the moment is also from the Blond Absolu range and it's the Cicaextreme Mask. What I love about this is that it doesn't weigh my hair down, is easy to rinse and leaves my hair feeling silky soft.
Detangler/heat protectant: Again, I have two, but for different reasons. I use Kérastase Genesis Defense Thermique on towel dried hair, before I comb through. I love this range, because it's designed for hair that is prone to breakage and falling out (I used the shampoo and conditioner when my hair was at its worst last year). It can be used as a detangler, heat protectant, and to tame frizz. I use it mainly to detangle, which helps to prevent any loss of hair. Then I use some L'Oreal Elvive Colour Protect Anti-Brassiness Hair Oil*, which really helps to remove any warm tones, and I spray Color Wow Dream Coat (Save 20% by using the code LYMIN at the checkout on Look Fantastic) all over the lengths, as this speeds up drying and helps to keep my hair sleek and smooth until I next wash it. Even if I am putting waves in my hair, I will use Dream Coat, as it helps to hold the style.
Oil: An oil that can be used pre or post drying the hair is Kérastase Blond Absolu Huile Cicaextreme Hair Oil. This is a very lightweight oil, so running a little bit through the hair as a finishing touch, adds some shine and hydration, without making it greasy or heavy. I also don't find that it gets greasy quicker with this oil, however I do use a very small amount each time.
Dry Shampoos: I used to really dislike dry shampoo, because it felt gritty, left a white cast and just left me feeling like I had a lot of product in my hair. That's why I think that it's worth spending a little more on a bottle, rather than using a supermarket one. I want one that will actually absorb my oils, but that will also make my hair smell nice, and add some texture - I don't ask for much, do I? My two favourites are Moroccanoil Dry Shampoo (which is available for light or dark tones), and Kérastase Fresh Affair Dry Shampoo. Both of these really do a brilliant job at absorbing oils, don't leave my hair looking white and don't leave me feeling like I have a lot of product in my hair. I find it best to apply them at night and then brush them through in the morning, as they have plenty of time to absorb the oils. That said, if I'm in a rush, I'll just spray on my roots, brush through and go. They would be ideal for gym-goers.
Silk pillowcase & scrunchies: I bought a silk pillow case last year and then another more recently, but I could do with buying more, so that I'm never without one, as I've been advised to change my pillow after every sleep, due to the amount of infection in my body, and the fact that I'm a dribbler - not something that I ever thought I'd admit publicly, but there we go! I also had silk hair ties, but I bought the larger ones recently (in a set of three), from Slip, and I much prefer them. They are so comfortable that I forget that I'm wearing them, plus there is no breakage when I tie my hair up or let it down afterwards.
So that's everything! I have a lot more haircare and do switch things up sometimes, but these are my main favourites and most effective products that I have found to work for me. Do you use any of these products? What are your go-tos? I'd love to know!
