Essences - are they necessary or gimmicks?

Essences - are they necessary or gimmicks?

The first essence I ever tried was gifted to me - had it not been, I'm unsure that I would have tried one as I wasn't sure that I actually needed one in my routine - how wrong was I? You can read that post here. I have gone on to repurchase Omoressence many, many times and am still using it almost five years later! So what is an essence and do you really need it? An essence is a kind of toner-come facial mist-come serum, so why would you need to use one if you already use these products? It kind of sandwiches the products together, which enhances the protection of the skin barrier and helps to banish dehydration. It's probably not what most people would consider an essential step, yet if you use an essence regularly, your skin will thank you in the form of looking plump and juicy. I have three that I love and want to share with you today.

Dermalogica Redness Relief Essence*: A lot of fair skinned people suffer from redness, which can worsen both in summer and winter and can be caused by a number of issues. This essence is perfect for soothing and calming the skin and reducing the redness. It contains aloe vera, licorice root extract and Vitamin E among other ingredients, all of which are aimed at calming the skin, reducing sensitivity and strengthening the skin's barrier function. It is patted on to the skin, after cleansing, before proceeding with serum/moisturiser/eye cream. It can be used both morning and night and I have found that it doesn't tingle or irritate my easily inflamed skin. It layers well with other products and is the ideal product to use if you've had a reaction to a product, or have overdone acids/retinol, as it instantly soothes. Ideally though, you would use it daily, rather than just on those occasions, as that will strengthen the skin's barrier.

Omorovicza Omoressence: I have raved about this essence on numerous occasions on the blog because it suits my skin perfectly! It contains the brand's thermal spa waters, which are instantly soothing on the skin, and it also contains glycerin and hyaluronic acid, which attract and retain water in the skin. I pat a few drops into my skin for an instant boost of hydration, but it also instantly soothes and calms my skin. I absolutely adore this essence because it leave my skin looking so plump and juicy and it really helps to diminish the appearance of fine lines. Filorga Global Repair Essence*: The more I try from this brand, the more I love, and my curiosity grows further. This essence has a thicker texture than the previous two, and it contains more ingredients, which include oils, glycerin and other nourishing ingredients. For this reason, I would recommend this essence to those who have dry skin, rather than just dehydrated, because skin instantly feels plump, comfortable and supple. It layers well with other products and with consistent use, skin feels more elasticized, revitalised, smooth and soft. It is applied in the same way as the other essences, and layers well without any pilling. It is perfect for these colder months, when the lower temperature, central heating, open fire and wind, wreaks havoc with the skin. To achieve optimum results, it's best to use an essence daily. I know that some people might think it's an unnecessary step, but the results say otherwise.

Do you use an essence as part of your routine? I'd love to hear your thoughts!
