I know that so may people hate January and say it's the worst month of the year, but I don't think that way - we're lucky to be alive to see it and live it. There are so many people who aren't here, but would have loved to live through January - it's important to be grateful. I feel like the month has flown by because my husband was off work until the 11th and then I had two medical appointments in the last week, so it's kind of flown by really. Plus, I love that the snowdrops are out and there is a bit of a stretch in the evenings. The medication I take makes me very sleepy, so I need to nap every afternoon, and waking to a slightly light evening is so much better than waking up in the dark! I want to share some of the things that I've loved this month....
TV: The Queen's Gambit (Netflix) - we devoured this series in a few days after resisting for so long because I didn't imagine that I'd enjoy a show about chess. How wrong was I? We were hooked from the first episode. What an amazing actress Anya Taylor-Joy is - her character is so compelling, but I think that her acting made the show more addictive. Speaking of Anya, we also binge-watched Season 5 of Peaky Blinders, which we had been meaning to watch for months! I absolutely love that series and am gutted that Season 6 will be the last. Cillian Murphy is such a brilliant actor, so I'm going to have to check out what other shows/films he is in. The fact that he's Irish, gives him bonus points! Right now, we're watching Rita on Netflix, which is a Danish comedy/drama. Rita is a school teacher who is loved by the kids, but the teachers and people in general, are intimidated by her honest, ballsy attitude. I'm probably not selling it to you but it's worth watching if you like something easy in the evenings. (I also watched a few cheesy Christmas films on Netflix, while my husband wasn't around, because he has his limit and we did have several Christmas movie days over the holidays! I just love anything Christmassy and my niece is the same - she's still watching the films too!)
Other things:
I loved that we had some snow, even though it wasn't as much as some Northern counties - not a complete blanket, but it was enough for my nephews and nieces to build snowmen and it was nice to look out at! I have a feeling that we'll get some more before the season is over. Fingers crossed!
If you read this post, you will see that I treated myself to a new handbag at the end of the year. I haven't worn it out yet, as I've only been to medical appointments and I think it deserves a better first use, but I'm enjoying drooling over it and planning what I'll wear it with!
I've been having lots of indulgent baths, using Mio Liquid Yoga when I'm feeling broken, and Laura Mercier Almond Coconut Body Wash or Jo Loves Pomelo, when I'm feeling like spoiling myself, and layering them with the matching body cream/lotion and fragrance. Yes, I even wear fragrance to bed! You can save 20% on Laura Mercier products on Look Fantastic, by using my LYMIN code.
I'm still in love with my silk pillowcase but need to buy another one because I have to change my pillowcase every time I sleep on it, on advice from my doctor, due to residual infection. Fortunately, my LYMIN code works on the Slip brand on Look Fantastic to save 20%.
I've been loving seeing my lashes grow, thanks to my NYK1 Lash Growth Serum* - it really does make a difference to the length of my lashes, and perhaps the volume too, but you have to be consistent when using it. It definitely makes me miss my lash extensions less - I used to get them regularly, but the lockdowns last year and this year have put paid to that!
Speaking of health, I am so grateful for my nebuliser as my breathing still isn't right since I got double pneumonia before Christmas - I shouldn't have let it get that far, but I just really didn't want to go to hospital. Since contracting Covid early last year, my breathing hasn't been normal, so I had a CT scan with contrast during the week and hopefully it might give some answers. In the meantime, I'm very grateful for my nebuliser (and my GP).
We still have so many chocolates in the house, due to the fact that we could only have limited visitors for a limited period of time. It's nice to know it's there, which strangely makes me crave it less!
Finally, we discovered a new burger place that has opened near us and it's absolutely delicious for when we feel like a treat, plus we're supporting an independent, local business, which is great. Good on them for opening during the current climate!
That's pretty much the best of what's made me happy in January! How about you?
