I know! Another new Hourglass purchase but, in my defence, my Nars Pro Smudgeproof Eyeshadow Base is almost finished so I decided to try the Hourglass Veil Eye Primer out of curiosity. I've been using the Nars one since it was released and it is, without doubt, the best eye primer I've used. I have the delightful combination of oily lids and watery eyes so I need my eye products to be hard working and I never, ever apply shadow without primer because if I don't, within a few hours, my shadow will have either creased or disappeared! There are other big name primers out there that other people swear by but they just don't work for me. So I wanted to put the new kid on the block to the test and compare it to my usual favourite.
Nars Smudge Proof Eyeshadow Base: I love that this has a doe foot applicator as I like to apply it directly to my lids ( I know people might think it's unhygienic but it's not like I'm sharing it with anyone else). When I say that a little goes a long way, I really mean it and t works equally well when applied with a brush or my finger. It creates an even canvas that has some tackiness but it's not overly sticky. All shadows apply evenly over this primer - powder, cream, pencils and the finish is smooth. Pigmentation isn't necessarily amplified but the colours are exactly as they are in the pan - mattes, shimmers, glitters, metallics all apply beautifully over this primer and do not budge, crease or fade, no matter how long I leave them on. This is why I have repeatedly repurchased this primer and was convinced that no other could compare. 8g for £21.
Hourglass Veil Eye Primer: So you might be wondering why I bought a different primer if I loved the other one so much? Sometimes, you just have an itch that needs to be scratched and I tend to love Hourglass products so I thought why not give it a go! This has tube packaging and the formula is slightly thicker than the Nars one so you need to be careful to only dispense a tiny amount, otherwise you will go through the tube really quickly. It's also only necessary to use a tiny amount. It's a bit more flesh toned than the Nars primer, although that does come in several shades. I personally prefer to apply it with a flat shader brush but that's just personal preference as you can just use your finger. I've been applying this on one eye and the Nars on the other to really test it and I honestly could not find fault - both are working equally well - vibrant pigmentation, no creasing, fading and long-lasting. As boring as it may sound, these primers are equally excellent in terms of performance. The latter is more expensive, however you get more product for the price so it isn't something that I would consider when choosing which to repurchase. This one has a slight edge due to the flesh tone but the other one is also available in flesh tones but I haven't tried those yet. Overall, it's a thumbs up from me. 9.6ml for £27.
