It's so frustrating when you put a lot of effort into applying your makeup only for it to disappear a few hours later. Around Christmas, makeup needs to last all day and possibly into the night, it needs to withstand heating, rain (possible snow) and general partying/socialising. I've compiled my go-to products that will ensure my base stays put for as long as possible - I think that if the base is done right, everything else will wear well - blush, bronzer, highlighter etc so I am just focusing on products that will make your base last longer.
To prime or not to prime? It's a personal choice but I personally always prime my face. If I want to ensure that my foundation won't budge, I will always use either Cover FX Gripping Primer or Milk Makeup Hydro Grip, both of which I reviewed here. The Cover FX one really ensures that makeup won't budge, even if worn for more than 13/14 hours but you need to ensure that you just pat it into the skin rather than rub it in.
Foundation: Choose a long-lasting foundation (obviously!), but long-lasting doesn't have to mean matte or full coverage. My choice is Fenty Beauty Pro Filt'r Hydrating Foundation, which I reviewed here. This is the longest-lasting foundation I own and combined with either of the primers mentioned above, ensures that there is no separation, fading or sinking into fine lines.
Concealer: Rather than reach for a hydrating concealer, it's best to opt for one that will give decent coverage but isn't drying. I love Milk Makeup Flex Concealer for blemishes or areas of redness as it offers full coverage. For my under eye area, I like to use Charlotte Tilbury Magic Away Liquid Concealer, which doesn't cake, crease, settle into fine lines or budge.
Powder: I wasn't always a fan of powdering my face as most just left my skin looking older and cakey but that changed when I discovered Charlotte Tilbury Airbrush Flawless Finish. This powder mattifies the skin but without leaving it with a powdery look. It also doesn't age the skin or settle into fine lines, instead it blurs the look of pores and gives the skin a very polished look. It also extends the wear time of any foundation. Charlotte Tilbury Genius Magic Powder acts like a soft focus filter for the face but it gives a luminous look to the skin, rather than a matte finish. Full review here.
Setting Spray: I always use a setting spray as a final step when I want to really ensure that my base will last. I also love that it will get rid of any powdery look. One of my favourites to use is Pixi Make Up Fixing Mist, which is infused with rose water and green tea so it smells beautiful! It helps to extend the wear time of any base but the only con is that the mist action isn't very fine.
Eyes: Despite having dry skin, my lids are oily so I always use an eye primer. The two that I recommend are Nars Pro Prime Smudge Proof Eyeshadow Base and Anastasia Beverly Hills Eye Primer. Both of these are absolutely bulletproof in terms of preventing fading, creasing and smudging!
