Pat McGrath Skin Fetish Sublime Perfection Foundation - does it live up to its name?

Pat McGrath Skin Fetish: Sublime Perfection Foundation Review

It seems that it's foundation season! So many brands that I love are releasing them at the moment but top of my list from when I got the initial notification was Pat McGrath Skin Fetish Sublime Perfection Foundation (what a long name!). There is no doubt that this is a pricey brand but I absolutely love everything I have bought so far - eyeshadows, lipsticks, lip gloss and lip pencils. As you can imagine, I had high hopes and despite the hefty price tag, I went ahead and ordered on release day. A primer and powder were also released as part of the Sublime Perfection System but I haven't bought those as I have so many primers and a few powders that I really love so I didn't feel the need (plus they are also pricey!). I have been testing the foundation with different application methods/primers and am ready to share my thoughts with you today.

I keep saying that it's pricey but haven't actually said how much. It's £60 or €63 for 35ml of product. I wish I could say that this is my most expensive foundation but that honour goes to By Terry Terrybly Densiliss, which is a whopping £78.50! Most foundations I own are around the £30-40 mark so buying one with s price tag this high is not a regular occurrence for me.

The packaging is high end - the glass bottle is heavy and even the box it comes in feels luxurious with gold logos and detailing. The foundation is available in 36 shades with a variety of undertones. I chose Light Medium 14, which works perfectly for me at the moment but when I go on on holiday next week, it probably will be a little light. For reference, this is pretty similar to the shade Medium in IT Cosmetics CC Cream.

The texture is quite runny but not completely watery. I have used it with a buffing brush, beauty sponge and my fingers to apply it and I really find that it applies equally as well with all three methods. I generally finish my base with a beauty blender no matter how I initially apply it. A light layer (1 pump) give very sheer coverage and, to be honest, I wouldn't spend this much money for just sheer coverage because I can get that from other less expensive products A second layer builds the coverage to medium and I may even go in with a little more in areas that are inflamed/red, if necessary. It layers very well and still gives the skin a very natural look. The finish is probably best described as semi-satin. It's not dewy, definitely not matte and really just looks very natural on the skin. It feels a little tacky initially when applied but it soon dries down and then doesn't budge. It doesn't settle into my fines lines or highlight any porous or textured areas. On my dry skin, I find the wear time to be excellent - I don't need to touch it up at all throughout the day and it still looks pretty much perfect after 9/10 hours of wear. I love that it feels pretty lightweight on the skin as I just don't like the feeling of lots of products on my skin.

Although it is oil free, it feels hydrating nn the skin. It is described as being infused with a Vita-Serum Complex, which boosts hydration by activating the natural production of hyaluronic acid and ceramides. That said, it doesn't feel at all greasy so those with combination skin would probably still enjoy wearing it. For those with oily skin, I'd imagine that powder would be necessary. I have worn it with and without powder and haven't seen any difference in wear time but I do have very dry skin.

Overall, I am really enjoying using this foundation but I don't think it will be for everyone. If you like full coverage, you should probably skip this as the coverage is medium at best. Those who like matte bases should skip this too (or else use a mattifying powder). Anyone with dry, normal or combination skin will enjoy this foundation as long as a natural finish is what you want. Those who are into 'Instagram makeup' might not like the skin-like finish. Will I repurchase? I don't know. It's very expensive so it would have to tick every box for me to pay that price again. Time will tell. It will be a while before I finish it so I don't need to make that decision any time soon.

Are you a fan of Pat McGrath makeup? Does this sound like your kind of foundation? I'd love to hear!
