Is the Dyson Supersonic hair dryer worth the hype/price?

Is the Dyson hair dryer worth the hype/price?

When the Dyson Supersonic hairdryer was first released, I really didn't think that it could be worth the price and couldn't have imagined myself ever buying it. Then the reviews started rolling in and it sounded amazing - lightweight, super fast and reduces frizz - my dream product! I love hair products - a good hair mask will make a big difference to my hair and I enjoy taking care of my hair however I don't love drying it. I've mentioned on here before that I have Chronic Lyme Disease and because of that, my energy levels are always low. Washing and drying my hair can seem as big a task as climbing Mount Everest sometimes and because of that, I quite frequently go to my salon for a wash & blow dry but that can obviously be quite expensive. Apart from the expense, it's also quite soul-crushing to add another task to the list of things that I can't do for myself. It's important to me to be able to take care of myself and even though I have been ill for a very long time, I have always done my best to take care of my skin, paint my nails, wear perfume and have clean hair as they are things that I can control (to an extent!), even if I am going to be wearing pyjamas all day! Knowing this, my husband very kindly treated me to the Dyson Supersonic hairdryer for my birthday earlier this month and I honestly couldn't be more grateful. But has it been worth the hype?

The first thing I noticed was how light it is. It's described as being 1/3 of the weight of the average hairdryer and I'd say this is true. My previous hairdryer was lighter than most but even that feels heavy in comparison to the Dyson. This is particularly brilliant for me as I honestly find drying my hair to be a fatigue-inducing chore (or used to!).

There are three attachments on the box with the dryer - two nozzles and a diffuser. I doubt that I will ever use the diffuser but '90s me would have loved it! The two nozzles are for drying the hair - one for rough drying and one for concentrated styling. The one for rough drying is ideal if you want to dry your hair quickly before adding waves and the concentrated nozzle is perfect for when drying section by section. The nozzles attach magnetically - you know that satisfying click you sometimes get from lipsticks? Well, this is another level!

There are four heat settings, including a constant cold setting and there are three air-settings (gentle, medium and fast). I'll be honest and say that I am not the most technical person but the blurb says that the volume of air drawn in is amplified by three times, which produces a high-pressure, high-velocity jet of air. It certainly feels very powerful!

I love that it has a long cable (2.7m) because I don't have a mirror close to my socket. It's small in size and, as I previously mentioned, light so I have no problem using it on low energy days. Also, because it's so powerful, it dries my hair very quickly, which also benefits me on days where my energy is low and means that I don't dread the whole task.

I have fine hair but a lot of it and it's mid-way down my back. Drying my hair used to take at least 30 minutes (to ensure that it was all completely dry and smooth), then I would straighten my hair but since getting the Dyson, it now takes around 8-10 minutes for my hair to be completely dry and because of the power and the smoothing nozzle, I don't have to use hair straighteners. Sometimes I still do if I really want to ensure that it's poker straight but other times, I just leave it as the frizz is eliminated by the dryer and whatever product I use.

Overall, I am absolutely delighted to have this dryer in my life. It is completely worth the hype, in my opinion and has made a big difference to my life. Whether or not it's worth the price is a very individual and personal thing. If you have difficult hair that looks like you've been dragged through a hedge backwards when left to dry naturally, then you will love this dryer. For the difference that it has made to my routine and life, it's totally worth the money. If I had pretty normal hair or normal energy levels, then I probably wouldn't see the value in a dryer of this price and would find other things that I could spend the money on but given my circumstances, I couldn't imagine being without it now!
